Fall is my favorite time of year for a number of reasons. For us in education, it means a fresh start with not only students and staff, but also parents and community members. Students enter our doors with an excitement for learning that is truly contagious. For me, fall also means football. I love football. I love the planning, strategy, toughness, and teamwork required to succeed in football. To me, it is the ultimate team sport that offers many lessons that can be applied in life with regard to setting common goals and overcoming adversity. Thinking back to my time as a youngster on a football team, I loved the camaraderie and feeling that I was part of something bigger than me. There was a great sense of “us†on these teams, and despite some early struggles, our teams had success. It wasn’t necessarily the overused cliché of “us against the worldâ€, but there was a sense of common purpose and bond. So, as I was studying for my fantasy football draft I began to wonder… how do we go about creating a strong sense of community or “us†with staff, students, and parents?
