Creating "Us"

Fall is my favorite time of year for a number of reasons. For us in education, it means a fresh start with not only students and staff, but also parents and community members. Students enter our doors with an excitement for learning that is truly contagious. For me, fall also means football. I love football. I love the planning, strategy, toughness, and teamwork required to succeed in football. To me, it is the ultimate team sport that offers many lessons that can be applied in life with regard to setting common goals and overcoming adversity. Thinking back to my time as a youngster on a football team, I loved the camaraderie and feeling that I was part of something bigger than me. There was a great sense of “us” on these teams, and despite some early struggles, our teams had success. It wasn’t necessarily the overused cliché of “us against the world”, but there was a sense of common purpose and bond. So, as I was studying for my fantasy football draft I began to wonder… how do we go about creating a strong sense of community or “us” with staff, students, and parents?

We posted this infographic from ascd on our Twitter feed (twitter.com/memspa) a while ago, and it's recently "caught fire" again so we thought we'd share it here too. It's a great reminder in a really nice package. Just click to download the pdf.

We love questions. Especially questions that seek clarification. We had several last week regarding the new requirements for safety drills. We hope this will help. If not, give us a call.

What will we do with October this year? For the first time in a long time, October is not going to be consumed by the MEAP test. Once a month that found you not able to leave your building, October will be much different this year. With that in mind, MEMSPA is offering several opportunities for quality professional development in October for you and your leadership team that will leave you with time to put your learning into practice.
