How The Positivity Project Transformed Palms Elementary’s School Culture and Boosted Achievement

Partner Updates,

In December 2024, the leadership team at Palms Elementary in Fair Haven, MI set three ambitious goals: to strengthen the school community and culture, invest in student character and behavior, and improve academics by increasing state test scores by 10% in every grade.

As January 2025 began, the school introduced several initiatives, including data analysis protocols, instructional rounds, class buddy partnerships, and focused assemblies. Yet the most transformative initiative was the introduction of The Positivity Project (P2).

A Culture Shift Through Character

The Positivity Project is a character education curriculum grounded in the research of positive psychology. Palms Elementary was drawn to its “Other People Mindset,” which encourages students to recognize that their words and actions affect others. The school wanted character to become a daily practice—not just a poster or occasional lesson—and P2 provided a clear, practical framework for consistency.

Teachers implemented the engaging, ready-to-use P2 slide decks multiple times each week. Daily announcements and cafeteria displays highlighted the weekly character strength, keeping it visible throughout the school day. To reinforce the lessons, the school connected its Student of the Month recognition to P2 stren

gths, honoring both students and staff who exemplified the featured character traits.

Measurable Results

Within two months, the impact was evident. Discipline referrals declined as students began taking ownership of their behavior through meaningful reflection and conversation. Teachers noticed a stronger sense of community, improved relationships, and an increase in academic focus.

The academic results were striking—nearly every state assessment showed gains exceeding 10%, with some grade levels improving by as much as 20%. While multiple initiatives contributed to this growth, staff credited P2 as a key driver of the positive shift. As students internalized the idea that effort and attitude impact others, they became more motivated to contribute to their classrooms and the broader school community.

Simple and Sustainable

One of the greatest strengths of The Positivity Project is its simplicity. Lessons take only 10–15 minutes a day, yet the effects are lasting and meaningful.

For Palms Elementary, P2 became more than an initiative—it became the foundation of a culture rooted in empathy, kindness, and mutual respect.
