Tanya Merritt

Tanya Merritt serves as the Principal of Washington Woods Middle School in Holt, where she leads with a heart-first philosophy centered on building meaningful relationships and a joyful school culture. Over a rich 28-year career in education, Tanya has dedicated herself to understanding the diverse academic and emotional needs of every student.

Before stepping into leadership four years ago, Tanya spent 24 years in foundational instructional roles. She taught 1st, 2nd, and 5th grades, specialized in 5th and 6th-grade mathematics, and served as a math interventionist. Transitioning into systemic support, she also served as an MTSS Coordinator, designing frameworks to ensure no student slipped through the cracks. This extensive classroom journey deeply informs her approachable leadership style, keeping her grounded in the daily realities of teachers and students alike.

Now as a principal, Tanya channels that experience into cultivating an environment where educators feel valued and middle schoolers feel safe to learn, grow, and belong. As an active member of MEMSPA, she looks forward to collaborating with fellow leaders to champion positive school climates and student-centered advocacy.
